To eliminate inequities, we must first recognize them. Within the learning ecosystem, we commonly consider inequities related to accessibility, resources, and digitalization. A critical, generally overlooked, systemic disparity exists: the skill gap. Too often, we build technology with implementation and training of the users as an afterthought. So, the question remains: how are members of educational institutions equipped to withstand the everlasting changes that are rising as a result of technological advancements? This talk focuses on virtual reality (VR), sharing experimental findings, student/faculty insights, and a path forward - exploring how we can create new educational pathways for the near generation of students and educators. Rashana Weerasinghe is a multi-hyphenate. She is a Product Manager, Adjunct Professor, and Researcher; fashioned from experiences spanning a number of industries, technologies, and growth stages - EdTech to E-Commerce, Autonomous Vehicles to Virtual Reality Headsets, and early to maturity growth stages. This tenure equips her with a deep-rooted focus on the human experience: be it customers, or students. Rashana’s main domain is consumer products, with an emphasis on emerging technology. Presently she works at Amazon, keeping close proximity to users to build automated processes infused with empathy. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
