Jordan Peele has once again delivered a breathtaking horror movie, this time in the sci fi alien invasion tradition of the 50s, and paired it with a complex critique of modern society. The target this time around is the spectacle and the way it manipulates desire and commadatizes spectacle over lived experiences. But instead of being a weird long lecture like the Situtationalist documentary The Society of the Spectacle, it is itself a fun spectacle, like the Situationalist movie Can DIalectics Break Bricks. The story of the Haywood siblings OJ and Emerald and their search for the “Oprah shot” of the skyborn alien apex predator that has turned their ranch into its hunting grounds manages to be massive and personal at once. The combination of wide panoramic shots with a monster that commands the sky along with dramatic and intentional use of silence creates an unsettling masterpiece that uses its own spectacle to question our relationship to spectacle and how it is used to manipulate and shape society. All while having the easy charm and reliability of the characters in a Jordan Peele movie, no doubt a function of his comedy background. The result is both a fun two hours in the cinema watching the world’s angriest Roomba terrorize a souther California ranch and a thoughtful critique on our relationship with genuine experience and the allure of the spectacle and how that both creates the illusion of the American dream, the dream cameraman Antlers Holst warns in the movie is a dream you never wake up from. What were you able to find tucked away in this surprisingly dense movie? Let us know in the comments and while you’re ther be sure to like and subscribe for the latest videos in your inbox.
