Southland Tales competed for Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2006, where it was heavily criticized for its incoherent and "stupid" plot. The film was originally set for a theatrical release in fall 2006 but this was pushed back all the way to November 2007 due to re-editing etc. With the additional editing that Richard Kelly did, most people don't get the plot of this film at all.

Southland Tales is indeed a very confusing and mind-bending film. Once you get it, you won't stop liking it. There are three graphic novels that stand as prequels and after reading that you will have a much better understanding of what is going on in the film. However, the novels went largely unread and are hard to get. I know that most people won't buy the graphic novels either.

In this video, I attempt to explain the entire movie. So much is going on that it was quite hard, but I still didn't want this to just be a basic explanation. I have worked on this for a long time and Southland Tales has become one of my favorite films. I won't deny that it took my four viewings until I finally understood the film itself. The first time it was confusing but because I am highly entertained by strange films I liked it.

The movie features a very mainstream cast including Justin Timberlake, Dwayne Johnson, Seann William Scott and the list goes on. I thought that would ultimately make the movie bad considering Justin Timberlake is the only one out of those who I would consider a "good" actor. I thought they were intended to be miscast but after a few watches, I realized that I got it all wrong.
