Following a video I made about Star Trek Picard, I noticed a number of commenters made the statement that a show taking place outside of Starfleet following non-Starfleet characters simply wouldn't be Star Trek anymore. Which begs the question: Does Star Trek need Starfleet? Does a Star Trek show need to be set within Starfleet to be Star Trek?
