Experience the drama and triumph of the 1955 Indianapolis 500 in this rare 16mm film, featuring Bob Sweikert’s historic win behind the wheel of a car built by Tulsa industrialist Jack Zink. At just 29, Sweikert claimed victory in one of the most memorable races of the decade.
In the winner’s circle, actress Dinah Shore congratulates Sweikert moments after his triumph.
But the race was also marked by tragedy. Former Indy 500 champion Bill Vukovich was killed in a devastating four-car crash, when his roadster flipped repeatedly on the track. Just one year later, Sweikert himself would lose his life in a sprint car accident.
This film was provided by Jack Zink and showcases a powerful moment in both Tulsa’s motorsports legacy and American racing history.
