Paul J. Wallin: Why is it a good idea for a parent to immediately contact our office when the child has been taken by social workers, versus waiting to court, and maybe asking for a court appointed lawyer.

00:09:22
Jonathan Lynn: Well one thing that we can do is that we have the time prior to court to prepare for the initial court appearance, whereas the court-appointed attorney will not have a chance to look at your case prior to court or understand what the case is going to be about prior to court. Another thing is that typically when we're making an appearance on a dependency case, we're only handling that one single appearance on that day, and we have the whole day to prepare and handle the appearance. Whereas…unfortunately just the reality of the system is that the court-appointed attorneys have a large stack of cases and often not a full amount of time to review everything that we would have.

Paul J. Wallin: So some I've had cases that there might be 25-30 cases on calendar, and the same lawyer is appointed on like 14-11-12 cases, and they don't know anything about the case. All these parents have lost their kids, they're terrified, they don't know what's going on. And this one lawyer is supposed to handle all these cases in a morning, and so much is at stake, where when we're handling a case, we're almost all the time just focused on that one case and we've had a few days in advance, and it can make a huge difference.

Jonathan Lynn: Yes, I think that is the situation that happens sometimes. And, and I do agree that it's better to go in and not just the file the same time as a court to have time to talk to the person before the court and be prepared.
