Bryce Patrick, Protocol Growth & Adoption of Ethereum Attestation Service (EAS), talks about what EAS is building in the Ethereum ecosystem during the Super Demo final at #EDCON2023! Bryce says EAS is an infrastructure public good for making attestations on or off-chain, and it is open-source, permissionless, tokenless, and free to use. He believes public goods start with passion, and EAS is being built by some of the earliest Ethereans and the projects they’re working on are really to further the ecosystem. He says no one has solved digital identity, which he believes is the holy grail of use cases because it can unlock so much, and his team realized that the identity ecosystem is completely fragmented and developers have a never-ending list of protocols to learn about identity and that fragmentation is really hard for developers to understand how to start building attestations or identity.

So what is identity? Bryce says at one point in your life, you didn’t have an identity and then you did, and that moment is when your mother attested to your name, and throughout life, other entities start attesting to different aspects of who you are. For example, your doctor attested to your date of birth and the government attested to your SSN, passport, or license. So the EAS team realized that your identity can be represented as an aggregate of attestations over time. So what are attestations? Bryce says attestations are digitally signed claims from any entity about anything or anyone, and attestations go beyond identity and can be used anywhere trust and verification are needed. The EAS team realized that if we want to solve identity, building protocols specifically for identity is really hard, and what we first need to start is to build an infrastructure layer where any entity can attest to anything. So what is the EAS team building? Bryce says his team has built a lot of tools that make the onboard experience really easy, and EAS is live on Ethereum Mainnet, Arbitrum, Sepolia, and Optimism Goerli, and will deploy on Polygon and Optimism soon.
