Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. Welcome to 5 Minute Fridays where we bring you an Islamic reminder -in 5 minutes or less
When you wake up and plan your day, what frames your plan?

One of the beautiful morning duas the Prophet (as) taught us to help us frame our day so Allah blesses the whole day.

Say it with me اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا،
وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا⁣

O Allah, I ask you for beneficial knowledge, wholesome and pure rizq (sustenance) and good deeds that are accepted by You. Is there anything else a person needs? [ Ahmad, Ibn Majah, al-Nasa'i]

The dua starts with اللَّهُمَّ O Allah, إِنِّي indeed\certainly, أَسْأَلُكَ I ask You. I beg you. It is a needy slave asking Allah, the All Powerful to aid him on this day by granting him three things. Three things everyone needs.

1)عِلْمًا نَافِعًا

Beneficial knowledge. This is knowledge that makes you a better worshipper of Allah (swt). Knowledge that makes you humble and obedient to Allah. So this is knowledge of Allah, the akhirah, what is halal or haram, fard or mandub. It is knowledge of the Qur’an and the life of the Prophet (as). This is knowledge that affects the heart and which results in tranquility and submissiveness to Allah, The All Mighty.

If it doesn’t reach the heart and remains on the tongue only , then this knowledge is a proof against that person because he did not act upon it. May Allah protect us from that.

Lesson for us today? From the time we wake up, we are bombarded with information. We live in the information age. How do we decide what to read, watch, or listen to? This dua gives us a criteria for filtering information. Ask: is it beneficial knowledge? Will it help me in worshiping Allah, building my character or fulfilling my Islamic duties? May Allah grant us beneficial knowledge عِلْمًا نَافِعًا. Ameen

2) وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا
The second thing we ask for is وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا - that is rizq, sustenance (food, wealth, e.t.c.) that is halal. We can seek our sustenance
(i) through halal means, or
(ii) through haram means
Allah does not accept that which is not tayyib, halal.

LESSON for us today? One of the greatest reasons for acceptance of dua is halal earnings so strive for that. May Allah (swt) grant us رِزْقًا طَيِّبًا sustenance that is halal.

3) وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا

This is the 3rd thing we ask for. We are saying, I ask you O Allah that my actions of obedience, worship and muamalat (dealings) are pleasing to and accepted by You (swt). So for the Muslim, it’s not just about doing deeds. All human beings do deeds. It’s about doing deeds that are acceptable to Our Creator.

What are acceptable deeds? Two conditions:⁣⁣
(i) done sincerely for Allah⁣⁣
(ii) done in accordance with Allah’s shariah (i.e. according to the Qur’an and Sunnah of His Prophet (alayhi salam)⁣⁣)

LESSON for us today? Why do we do actions? It could be for fame, to impress or for pleasing Allah (swt). All humans seek approval when doing actions. Approval from the boss, family, friends, or to follow the latest fashion. This dua reminds us, that for the Muslim, the ultimate focus when doing actions is to please the Creator (swt).

Make this dua every morning and let these 3 things frame the things we do throughout the day.
