Tens of thousands of Chinese working in the Philippines with offshore gambling operations are set to lose their work visas by mid-October 2024. The Southeast Asian country has been pushing to upend the gambling industry’s hold on the national economy. The Philippines reportedly posted a record 285 billion pesos (US$5 billion) in total gross gaming revenue, according to the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation, solidifying the country’s role as one of the most important gambling hubs in the region. Industry analysts said many if not most of the workers holding visas to work in the Philippines Offshore Gaming Operations (Pogos) are from China. They reportedly work alongside Filipinos as well as citizens of third countries.
