Music in complex meter has an uneven beat composed of different groups of two or three subdivisions. Music in 5 has one group of 2 and one group of 3, and music in 7 has two groups of 2 and one group of 3. Being able to recognize these beat groupings is very important when interpreting notated music in complex meter. So how do we do that? In this video from Berklee Online’s Time and Rhythm course, instructor Matt Sharrock explains how. For the sake of simplicity, in this video we’ll stick to examples in the two most common time signatures associated with complex meter—5/8 and 7/8. In these time signatures, the eighth notes’ beamings conveniently give us great insight into how the beats are grouped. In the 5/8 example, the first measure is beamed to show a 2+3 grouping and the second measure is beamed to show a 3+2 grouping.
