How to Paint over Aluminum wheels or rims.
However first question is should you polish the Aluminum or should you paint.
If you like the style of the wheels, but don't like the polish, then painting is the way to go.
If you want to Powder coat the wheels (does the best job) then you will need to bring the wheels to a shop to Powder coat. However, if there is clear coat paint on the aluminum, then you can neither polish nor have them Powder coated.
How do you know if there is clear coat?
Well, first try an aluminum polish and see if black tarnish comes off... If it does on a white rag, then there is no clear coat. But.. if there is no black tarnish, then the wheels have been clear coated which limits your option to painting the wheels.

Here are the secrets to painting on Aluminum wheels and how to do a long lasting job. I show you how to prep and the proper products to buy!
Most important is the prep!
You can't just paint over, you MUST sand down the wheels and use an Epoxy Primer as your base adhesion layer.

As in painting anything, the preparation (prep) is the most important and same goes for painting over aluminum wheels.
You must sand, etch the surface, then apply an epoxy primer for better adhesion.
In this video, I used the Dupli color paint in graphite and the dupli-color gloss clear coat on top of painting these Aluminum wheels.

The wheels came out fantastic!
