Zakah is one of the five ‘pillars’ of Islam: the giving of a portion of our wealth to help those most in need. It is not a tax, it is an act of purification. And due to the blessings of Almighty Allah, ultimately it does not decrease our wealth.

Of those upon whom this duty falls, many choose to fulfil this obligation in the month of Ramadan. Now is a good time to prepare, to take stock of our wealth over the last year, and then to fulfil this duty by making sure we calculate the amount of Zakah according to the teachings of Islam.

Zakah does not just benefit the receiver, it also benefits the giver, as does any genuine act of worship – it brings use closer to Allah, and makes us more conscious of the blessings He has bestowed upon us.
