LEGO 31212 Milky Way is the latest LEGO Art set to be announced, and much like any good piece of art, it lends itself well to a discussion, not just about this one piece, but about the concept of art in general.

While some LEGO Art sets manage to translate a real-world image or concept into blocky form successfully, even adding something by doing things only LEGO can do, other recent offerings have failed to entirely stick the landing, and can feel a little lacking as a result.

On the one hand, 31212 Milky Way looks gorgeous, with a beautiful colour scheme and excellent use of greebling to give the galaxy a delightful 3D texture. On the other hand, it's just not easy capturing the scope and scale of an entire galaxy, with all its tiny twinkling stars, on a relatively small LEGO canvas. The result ends up looking somewhat pixelated, and not entirely like the source material.
