This week, former Taiwanese president Ma Ying-jeou was on a trip through China as a private citizen, at the same time that Taiwan's current president, Tsai Ing-wen, was in the United States. Tsai's unofficial visit sparked diplomatic anger from Beijing, which considers the self-ruled, democratic island as part of its territory.
